Whats Hatching at our House

Isaac is raising quail.
We ordered 120 eggs and we should end up around 60 quail.
These are a special breed from Texas A &M
that are suppose to be all white meat Coturnix quail.

When we got the 400.00 incubator two weeks later...one of the parts was broke.
Unfortunately it was a significant piece but we didn't want to wait any longer to get our quail going.
The piece connected to the motor and turned the eggs.
Isaac fixed the piece but for some reason the motor didn't "take" to the fix.
So Winston improvised with a stepper motor and a "timer"...which he programmed.
It sounds complicated but it is all working.
In 17 days we should have a brood of quail.
This week we can candle them and see which eggs were fertile.
This is the cage that Isaac built. We scraped a bed frame for some of the boards.
We have it set up in front of our living room window so we can watch them.
I have always been intrigued with those bee and ant farms...but we will have to do with
watching quail. They are suppose to have a very nice song that were popular in Japan.
The fact that they are a favorite with Japanese and also the fact they have the best food to meat and egg ratio, these were the determining factors to why we went with them.
Also they don't crow.lol

  1. Jumpin' Jehosaphat! How fun and interesting! Keep us posted.

When I was a girl, living as always, in Venice, Florida, quail coveys were plentiful. They wandered through our yards, making the bob-white sound. I loved them.

Then there is a good friend who makes quail stew, with dark gravy, and dumplings.

    Happy evening.

  2. I love watching and hearing any birds. Your boys are so clever to fix the machine.
Remember that movie "The Birds" that was scary? lol! After seeing that dreadful movie as a child,
I would run when I would see a flock of birds. How wrong is that? lol!
I look forward to hearing more about your flock of birds : )
